FERRARI DINO 206 GT AT A GLANCE

intro_dino206

The Ferrari Dino 206 GT Aluminum holds a special place in Ferrari’s illustrious history, debuting in 1967 as the precursor to the renowned Dino 246 GT. Designed as a tribute to Enzo Ferrari’s beloved son, Alfredino “Dino” Ferrari, who passed away tragically at a young age, the 206 GT was part of a lineage that honored his contributions to Ferrari’s engineering legacy. Unlike Ferrari’s other models, the Dino didn’t carry the famed prancing horse emblem, establishing its own distinct identity within the brand’s prestigious lineup. Only 153 units of the hand-built aluminum Dino 206 GT were produced, making it one of the rarest and most coveted models in the Ferrari catalog.

Under the sleek, lightweight aluminum body of the Dino 206 GT lies a 2.0L V6 engine, a powertrain in which Dino Ferrari himself played a key role in developing. This engine was mounted transversely behind the driver, a bold design choice that not only improved handling but allowed the car to maintain its compact and agile proportions.

Designed by the legendary Pininfarina, the Dino 206 GT features fluid, graceful lines that flow from its low-slung nose to its sweeping rear haunches, a form that blends beauty with aerodynamic efficiency. Its seductive curves, compact wheelbase, and purposeful stance make it one of the most timeless and iconic designs in automotive history.

ABOUT THE Vehicle we are AUCTIONING

Chassis number 00238 was initially delivered to Rome and later changed hands among several Italian owners before a British buyer drove it to the UK in 1978. It was owned by a series of enthusiasts, including a restaurateur who owned “Dino’s”. The cars first significant restoration took place in the 1980s in Tetbury, where it was featured in Classic and Sports Car magazine in 1982. During this period, the engine block was replaced with a correct 2-litre unit. Another full restoration occurred in the late 1990s, returning the car to its original Argento Metallizzato over Nero with blue cloth inserts. This restoration included a correct exhaust system and authentication by Ferrari Classiche, which certified the replacement engine as a proper 2-litre Tipo 135 B unit.

Throughout its history, the Dino has been meticulously maintained. Notable milestones include the engine rebuild by Bob Houghton after frost damage in 1981, subsequent ownership by Bugatti enthusiasts, and careful usage that saw milage rise to only 59,600km by 2012. The Dino has consistently been serviced by specialists, with invoices on file documenting routine maintenance and significant service costs, ensuring the car remains in excellent condition. Currently, this Dino is in superb order, retaining an authentic original feel and a patina that reflects its cherished history. It drives exceptionally well and comes with a comprehensive history file, handbooks and toolkit.

DINOS CLASSIC 6-SPOKE DESIGN

The wheels of the Ferrari Dino 246 GT are a classic piece of design in their own right, seamlessly contributing to the overall aesthetic and performance of the vehicle. With a typical setup of 14-inch Cromodora alloys with a six-spoke design, the wheels lend an elegant yet sporty touch to the Dino. The juxtaposition of the gentle curves of the car against the angular, straightforward design of the wheels creates a compelling visual harmony. Behind these iconic wheels, the Dino was fitted with disc brakes on all four corners, vented at the front for improved cooling and solid at the rear.

TIMELESS MINIMALISM

The interior of the Ferrari Dino 206 GT, as shown in the image, exudes a minimalist yet elegant charm. It features a classic three-spoke wooden steering wheel with the Dino logo at its center, adding a touch of vintage sophistication. The dashboard houses a set of clear, analog gauges, keeping the driver focused on essential information. The seats, upholstered in black leather with blue fabric inserts, provide a striking contrast and a blend of comfort and style. The cabin’s overall layout is driver-focused, with a simple gear lever and switches positioned for easy access. Subtle chrome accents on the door handles and a clean, uncluttered design contribute to a sense of refined luxury, perfectly complementing the car’s sporting nature.

TIPO 135 B ALLOY

The Ferrari Dino 206 GT was powered by the Tipo 135 B 2.0-liter V6 engine, a highly advanced unit for its time. Made entirely of aluminum alloy, both the engine block and heads contributed to significant weight savings, enhancing the car’s overall performance and handling dynamics. This 65-degree V6 featured dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder bank and a bore and stroke of 86mm by 57mm, optimizing high-revving capability and efficiency. Producing approximately 180 horsepower at 8,000 RPM, the engine delivered a lively powerband, perfectly suited for the Dino’s agile chassis. Equipped with three Weber 40DCN carburetors, the Tipo 135 B ensured precise fuel delivery, giving the 206 GT its responsive throttle feel. The transversely mounted engine layout further helped lower the center of gravity, improving cornering and overall balance.
