Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster at a glance

intro_300slr

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is a legendary two-door sports car produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1957 to 1963. Building on the success of the original 300 SL Gullwing, the Roadster retained its high-performance pedigree while introducing an open-top design that further elevated its status as an icon of luxury and innovation. With its sleek, aerodynamicstyling and top-tier engineering, the 300 SL Roadster set new standards in both speed and sophistication.

Designed under the visionary Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the Roadster featured a more accessible entry than its predecessor, replacing the signature Gullwing doors with conventional doors for easier ingress and egress. It retained the lightweight space-frame chassis, ensuring exceptional rigidity and handling.

Assembled in Stuttgart, Germany, the 300 SL Roadster was powered by the advanced 3.0-liter M198 inline-six engine with direct fuel injection—a groundbreaking technology at the time. Delivering 215 horsepower, the Roadster reached remarkable speeds that placed it among the fastest production cars of its era. In 1999, the 300 SL was honored by readers of the German classic car magazine “Motor Klassik” as the “Sports Car of the Century”.

ABOUT THE Vehicle we are AUCTIONING

We are excited to present a beautifully restored Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster at auction. Originally delivered new to Germany in April 1961, this exceptional example later made its way to the USA before returning to Europe, eventually arriving in Switzerland, where it has been carefully preserved.

Having had five owners over its lifetime, this 300 SL Roadster underwent a comprehensive restoration in 1995/1996 by a respected specialist (not Kienle). During the restoration, the car was refinished in an elegant silver/red color scheme, deviating from its original white/blue specification. Retaining its matching numbers, the vehicle has been meticulously maintained and has since covered 60,291 km, remaining in outstanding condition.

Prior to delivery, a fresh service will be conducted to ensure it meets the highest standards of performance and preservation. Offered net, this 300 SL Roadster represents an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic and sought-after classic Mercedes-Benz models.

Classic Elegance, Timeless Appeal

This Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is equipped with classic painted steel wheels paired with chrome hubcaps, featuring the iconic Mercedes-Benz star at the center. This elegant yet functional design was the standard setup for most 300 SLs, offering a timeless look that perfectly complements the car’s vintage aesthetic. The vented wheel design aids in brake cooling, a subtle nod to the car’s performance heritage. Finished with white-wall tires, these wheels enhance the Roadster’s sophisticated presence, making it a true icon of 1950s automotive design.

CHARME FROM 1950

The interior of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster encapsulates a harmonious blend of aesthetic elegance and functional design, an emblem of 1950s luxury motoring. The cabin is draped in sumptuous red leather, providing a rich and inviting atmosphere. Each element, from the seats to the door panels, showcases meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Central to the driver’s view is a classic, intuitively designed dashboard that houses a full array of gauges, including a speedometer, tachometer, and essential monitoring instruments, all elegantly framed within polished chrome bezels. These gauges are not only beautifully integrated but provide clear, immediate feedback, crucial for both touring and spirited driving.

The steering wheel, with its slender, iconic spokes and Mercedes emblem, stands out as a statement piece, offering both a luxurious feel and precise control. Behind it, the layout of controls and dials is both practical and aesthetically pleasing, emphasizing the car’s grand touring capabilities.

3.0L INLINE-SIX

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster is powered by the innovative M198 engine, a 3.0-liter inline-six known for its mechanical direct fuel injection—an advanced adaptation from aviation technology and one of the first in passenger cars.

Producing approximately 215 horsepower, this engine enabled the 300 SL to exceed speeds of 160 mph, making it one of the fastest production cars of the 1950s. It features an overhead camshaft and an aluminum block with iron cylinder liners, optimizing weight and durability. The direct injection system improved power, fuel efficiency, and throttle response, enhancing both its racing and daily driving capabilities.

A robust cooling system, including a large radiator and an oil cooler, ensures the engine operates efficiently under high-performance conditions. This technical prowess underscores Mercedes-Benz’s legacy of innovation and high-performance engineering in the 300 SL Roadster.
