Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 at a glance

intro_930

Unveiled at the prestigious Paris Motor Show in 1977, the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3, generallyknown as the 930, marked a significant evolution in Porsche’s sports car lineup. This model introduced a more powerful and refined turbocharged 3.3-liter flat-six engine, delivering an impressive 300 horsepower, which was a considerable advancement from its predecessors.

The 930 Turbo was equipped with a robust four-speed manual transmission and featured pioneering technology such as an intercooler to enhance engine efficiency and performance. This addition helped solidify the 930’s reputation for exceptional power and reliability, making it a favorite among sports car enthusiasts.

The design of the 911 Turbo 3.3 was both aggressive and elegant, with wider wheel arches and the distinctive “whale tail” rear spoiler that became iconic symbols of Porsche’s commitment to high-performance sports cars. The interior was luxuriously appointed with leather upholstery and refined finishes, offering both comfort and luxury in a high-speed package. As one of the quintessential models of the late 1970s and 1980s, the Porsche 930 Turbo remains a celebrated classic.

ICONIC FUCHS WHEELS

The 3.3 is fitted with the iconic Fuchs wheels, a hallmark of classic Porsche design. These forged aluminum rims are celebrated for their distinctive five-leaf pattern, finished in black with polished edges, combining strength with lightweight properties for enhanced performance.

Compared to the 3.0 the brake system was adapted to the increased engine power. The internally ventilated and now perforated brake discs were thicker compared to the 3-litre turbo and had larger ventilation ducts.  The four-piston aluminium brake callipers were derived from the Porsche 917 and had cooling fins for better heat dissipation.

Built for Racing

The interior of the Porsche 930 Turbo 3.3 exemplifies a focus on high-performance driving. Dominated by black tones, the cabin is outfitted with racing seats that blend superior support with stark functionality, perfect for the rigorous demands of spirited driving. These seats are not just for show; their contoured design ensures that both driver and passenger remain securely positioned, no matter the pace.

The dashboard presents a classic Porsche layout, with an array of essential gauges that monitor everything from speed to boost pressure. The racing steering wheel, a three-spoke design, provides a firm grip and precise control, complemented by a minimalist array of switches and controls within easy reach, ensuring the driver’s focus remains unbroken on the road ahead.

This interior is purpose-built for racing, embodying a stark aesthetic that complements the 930 Turbo’s intense power and dynamic prowess.

TURBO 3.3 UNVEILED

Despite the high performance offered by the original 911 Turbo 3.0, many customers desired an even more powerful sports car. In response, Porsche developed an enhanced model in 1977 based on the first Turbo. This new version, known as the 911 Turbo 3.3, delivered 300 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. This was achieved by increasing the engine displacement from three to 3.3 liters, raising the compression ratio of the six-cylinder boxer engine to 7:1, and adding an intercooler.

The introduction of an intercooler—a first for a production vehicle—allowed for a greater mass of air to be delivered to the cylinders as cooled air occupies less volume (“the air contracts”). Additionally, the lower temperature allowed for higher compression because the likelihood of engine knocking increases with the temperature of the compressed gas. This improved internal cooling was crucial for enabling the increased compression. The new 930 still featured a four-speed manual transmission, reaching top speeds of 260 km/h (161 mph) and accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 5.3 seconds.
