The Porsche Carrera GT was originally developed as a successor to the 911 GT1 and was manufactured for just a handful of years from 2004 to 2007. In total, 1,270 Carrara GT models were produced and in its time in production this Porsche earned a number one spot on the Sports Car International’s Top Sports Cars of the 2000s list and ranked number eight on the Top Sports Cars of All Time list. The very first Porsche Carrera GT model was presented as a concept car in September 2000 and now 23 years later the Carrera GT continues to be one of the most notable models in recent Porsche history.
The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7-liter V10 engine that generates 612 horsepower and 592 Nm of torque. The Carrara GT can launch from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds while the top speed of this two-door supercar peaks at a hair-raising 330 km/h.
The Porsche Carrera GT features a carbon fiber monocoque chassis with minimal metal components. The chassis is manufactured by ATR Composites Group, known for their expertise in carbon fiber. A carbon rear subframe isolates the drivetrain and rear suspension. The suspension consists of double wishbones with inboard dampers and springs, similar to Formula One designs. This makes the Carrera GT such a lightweight and aerodynamic sports car, with a curb weight of approx. 1,380 kg.

Braking on all four corners is executed by the capable Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system and for the first time on fifteen inch rotors. Consisting of ceramic discs and composite pads, the system is lightweight and resistant to corrosion. PCCB reduces the unsprung weight of the braking system by fifty percent.
Four channel ABS comes standard. Attached to the braking system are forged magnesium wheels which weigh less than the tires wrapped around them. Michelin makes the only tire approved for the Carrera GT. They feature a soft compound rubber on the outer one third of the tread.
Porsche describes the Carrera’s clean interior as a function-oriented ambience and a cockpit free of all extraneous detail. Only high-tech materials such as carbon, magnesium and leather adorn most surfaces. Information is clearly presented in a classic Porsche instrument cluster which replaces the LCD screen featured on the concept car. The car also uses the 911 steering wheel which doesn’t follow the F1 trend to stick as many functions on the wheel as possible.
This old-school approach is a refreshing change, contributing to the GT’s ambiance and ensuring it will remain a timeless design. Extending into the dash is a center console covered in magnesium. Attached sits a carbon shifter which adds even more carbon to this carbon-laden car.
For closed top driving, two carbon fiber panels can be attached to the roof. At a low weight of just 2.4 kgs each, these panels are easily removable and can be stored in the front luggage compartment.
The Carrera GT is a car that pushed technological boundaries beyond any supercar of that time. Its beautiful profile encompassed a staggeringly powerful 612 PS V10 engine that was a direct descendant of the 10-cylinder race engine developed for the Le Mans 24-hours of 2000. The only modifications the race engine required were those to meet worldwide emissions and noise regulations for road legal cars.
And the headline figures for the Carrera GT go far beyond that staggering 612PS power output. It can reach 100km/h in just 3.9secs and roar on to 200km/h in 9.9secs. The top speed of the Carrera GT is officially 330km/h – which, 18 years ago, is a figure that would have been the preserve of low-flying aircraft.
The Carrera GT is renowned for having one of the best-sounding V10 engines of all time. Its high-revving powerplant produces a distinct and captivating exhaust note that is highly acclaimed by automotive enthusiasts.
